Live golf scores, results, and highlights from Round 1 of the U.S. Open on Thursday

Highlights from U.S. golf scores

U.S. GOLF

As the Los Angeles Country Club prepares to host its first major event, the U.S. Open is moving west. Could it be accompanied by a first-time major champion?

With Brooks Koepka winning the PGA Championship and Jon Rahm winning the Masters, two former U.S. Open champions have now won a major this year. On the other hand, the U.S. Open has functioned as a launching pad for players over the past three years, with major championship victories by Bryson DeChambeau (2020), Rahm (2021), and Matt Fitzpatrick (2022).

The four betting favourites heading into Thursday are all major champions, but Viktor Hovland will be one to keep an eye on after winning the Memorial Tournament and placing second at the PGA Championship.

The new merger agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will also start to affect Thursday’s first-round activity. There are more questions than answers about how and why the competing tours agreed to an agreement, weeks after Koepka became the first active LIV golfer to win a major.
